How Capital Gains Tax Works
- Short-term gains (held < 1 year) are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate.
- Long-term gains (held 1+ years) are taxed at preferential rates: 0%, 15%, or 20%.
- Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) of 3.8% may apply above income thresholds.
- Capital losses can offset gains; up to $3,000 excess can deduct from ordinary income.
